Cirque du Soleil needs a constant supply of performers who can do things most bodies cannot, and finding them is a full-time job. The Canadian newsmagazine 16x9 spends four months with the company's talent scouts as they travel the world auditioning gymnasts, dancers, contortionists, and acrobats, watching for the specific combination of skill and stage presence the company can build a show around. Cameras follow scouts into gyms, competitions, and open casting calls, showing what they look for beyond raw athleticism, and following a handful of hopefuls through the process of being noticed, tested, and considered. The film stays close to the practical side of the search rather than the finished spectacle, treating recruitment itself as the story. It is a plain, on-the-ground look at how a circus company assembles its performers before any audience ever sees them.
