JVA Wittlich, the largest correctional facility in Rhineland-Palatinate, holds 600 male inmates inside a complex big enough to contain a prison, a juvenile detention center, a hospital, and an educational center. The film goes behind the walls in this stretch of the German Eifel region to show how such a sprawling institution actually runs day to day. Cameras follow inmates through work assignments, classroom sessions, and medical appointments, and follow correctional officers through the training that prepares them for the job. Interviews with staff and prisoners lay out what release planning looks like for men serving long sentences, and what happens inside the juvenile wing, where the goals are different from the adult side. The educational center gets particular attention, with inmates pursuing trade certificates and basic schooling as a route out of the system. Rather than dramatizing prison life, the documentary treats Wittlich as a small, self-contained town with its own economy, hierarchy, and daily rhythm, built entirely around confinement.
