The Beards are a South Australian band whose entire catalog is songs about beards, and in 2009 they fly to Anchorage, Alaska, to compete at the World Beard & Moustache Championships as the first Australian team ever to enter. The event, running since 1990 and billed as the Olympics of professional beard growing, draws competitors who have spent years cultivating categories of facial hair most audiences have never heard named, and the film follows the band through the hotel rooms, backstage nerves, and strange Anchorage streets leading up to their performance and competition entry. Interviews let the band members explain, mostly straight-faced, why a band would build its whole identity around beards, and the championship floor supplies the visual payoff: mustaches waxed into shapes, full beards styled into sculptures, and judges scoring all of it with total seriousness. The film stays close to the band's own footage and reactions rather than building a wider case about the subculture, watching two worlds, novelty rock band and competitive beard growing, meet in one Alaskan convention hall.
