Noel Rodriguez joined the US Marine Corps intending to become a journalist, never having held a gun or considered killing. At twenty, holding an M16 for the first time, he decides instead to become a sniper, telling the camera, "I knew in my heart that nobody was going to be better than me." He describes his first kill, the disbelief that followed, and the mental trick that let him keep functioning: convincing himself each death saved other lives, then blanking out the details of every mission afterward. "It's a defence mechanism for me, I forget everything," he says. The film stays with Rodriguez as he recounts becoming one of the most feared snipers his enemies encountered, and the moment he realized he was losing himself, waking up once with a body beside him and his own knife in the man's chest, with no memory of it. There is no combat footage or outside commentary here, only Rodriguez talking directly about what killing did to his mind and why he finally had to stop.
