Scholars Merlin Stone, Carol Christ, Luisah Teish, and Jean Shinoda Bolen sit for interviews tracing goddess-centered religions back more than 35,000 years, from Paleolithic figurines to Neolithic settlements in Old Europe and the Near East. Archaeological sites and museum artifacts appear alongside the interviews as evidence for societies the film argues were organized around reverence for a female earth deity rather than a male sky god. The film builds its case that the suppression of these religions by patriarchal and monotheistic systems coincided with a shift toward viewing nature as a resource to exploit rather than a body to respect, and it draws a direct line from that shift to present-day pollution and ecological damage. Ritual imagery, chanting, and readings from ancient texts and myths fill out the historical sections. Made as part of a trilogy on women and spirituality, it treats goddess worship as a lost framework worth recovering, using the scholars as its primary voices rather than a narrator.
