Celerino Castillo III spent years as an undercover DEA agent working the cocaine trade between Latin America and the United States, and this VICE film sits him down to describe what that job actually involved. He talks through training death squads, a tactic the agency used to fight cartels with their own methods, and describes blowing up cocaine labs in the field rather than simply seizing product. Castillo lays out how trafficking networks operate on both sides of the US-Mexico border at once, with corruption and enforcement often occupying the same officials depending on who is paying. There is no reenactment or outside archival footage carrying the story; Castillo's own account, delivered directly to camera, is the film's entire case. The picture that emerges is less a triumphant drug-war narrative than an insider's plain description of a fight he no longer believes anyone is winning.
