Ransomware attacks no longer just cost money, they wreck lives. This DW Documentary report follows victims and their families describing what happens after a hacker locks their files and threatens to publish stolen data on the darknet unless a cryptocurrency ransom is paid: company bankruptcies, lost pensions, and in one case a suicide. An Israeli hospital that was attacked shares footage of its own crisis response, filmed and released specifically to help other hospitals avoid the same trap. A hacker interviewed for the film walks through how easy it actually is to breach a target's systems and steal their data, demystifying an attack that, in the US alone, caused an estimated 12.5 billion dollars in damage in 2023, more than double the figure from two years earlier. Citing a 2022 EU cybersecurity report, the film singles out healthcare as a uniquely exposed sector. Interviews and real case footage carry the reporting rather than dramatization.
