Cyber attacks hit American networks by the thousands each year, and this film goes to the people paid to stop them: investigators from the Department of Defense, the NYPD's computer crime squad, the private security firm Kroll Associates, and IBM's X-Force Threat Analysis Service. Directed by Ralph Lee, it moves through specific cases rather than generalities, from teenagers who managed to get confidential data on the B-1 stealth bomber to attacks that knocked out phone billing systems for millions of customers. The Code Red worm gets a full breakdown, tracked from its release through the damage it caused as it spread across the internet. Wireless networks come in for particular scrutiny, with interviewees walking through how easily an unsecured signal lets an outsider in. Online movie piracy rounds out the picture as a parallel front, where the fight is over intellectual property rather than infrastructure. The interviews carry the film, letting the people doing this work daily describe what an attack actually looks like from the inside.
