Hampi: Valley of the Kings

87 MIN · EN · STATUS: [ STREAMING ]

Hampi, a village on the Deccan plateau in southern India, once served as capital of the Vijayanagara Empire, one of the richest and most powerful kingdoms in Indian history. The film moves through the ruins scattered across its boulder-strewn landscape, temples, palace foundations, royal enclosures, and market streets, that once supported a city travelers compared favorably to Rome. Historians and local guides trace the empire's rise under a line of Hindu kings, its wealth built on trade in cotton, spices, and precious stones, and its sudden fall after a catastrophic defeat in battle left the capital sacked and abandoned. Carved stone chariots, monolithic statues, and the Virupaksha temple complex anchor the story in what survives today, while the surrounding countryside, still farmed and inhabited, shows how thoroughly the empire's memory has receded from a place that once held hundreds of thousands of people. The film treats Hampi as both an archaeological site and a lesson in how completely a great power can disappear.
