Istanbul's Topkapi Palace during the sixteenth century is the setting for this account of the Ottoman harem, the household of wives, concubines, and female relatives that surrounded the sultan. Rather than dwelling on the rumors that have followed the word for centuries, the film works to separate documented history from invented legend, drawing on the palace's own layout and surviving records to explain how the harem actually functioned as a political institution, not simply a private one. It looks at the women who rose within it, the hierarchy of mothers, wives, and attendants, and the influence some of them wielded over succession and court politics. The Topkapi setting grounds the account in physical detail, its chambers and corridors used to illustrate how confined and controlled life inside the harem really was. The film's aim is corrective: to replace a stereotype built on outsider fantasy with what the historical record and the palace itself can support.
