Harry Birrell got his first cine camera in 1928, at age eleven, and kept filming for the rest of his life even as his eyesight began to fail. The result is more than 400 reels of 16mm footage, shot with a genuine eye for composition, covering a ballroom-dancing youth in the 1930s, his command of a Gurkha battalion in the Indian army at the start of the Second World War, and sorties behind enemy lines in Burma as it ended. Decades later he is shown teaching his children to dance the twist, the same camera still running. His granddaughter Carina goes through the footage, his personal diaries, and stacks of photographs never previously shown, piecing together a man who treated a movie camera as a constant companion rather than a tool. Diary entries are read by actor Richard Madden, giving Harry's own voice to scenes he shot but never narrated himself. The film sits somewhere between home movie and war record, intimate in scale but covering a life that ran through empire, combat, and family.
