Hemingway, Fitzgerald, Faulkner
A Yale College literature course examining major novels and stories by Ernest Hemingway, F. Scott Fitzgerald, and William Faulkner. Lectures trace connections among the three writers across three scales: the broad sweep of American and world history in the early twentieth century, the formal experiments of literary modernism, and close attention to sensory detail and interior psychology within individual passages. The course was recorded on campus for Open Yale Courses in Fall 2011, meeting twice weekly for fifty-minute sessions, and includes the full set of video lectures covering works such as The Sun Also Rises, The Great Gatsby, and As I Lay Dying. Some lectures address graphic content and adult language present in the source texts. Materials are freely available online through Open Yale Courses under a Creative Commons license, with no enrollment or certificate fee.
