More than a hundred World War Two aircraft still rest on the bed of Lake Michigan, just off Chicago. The film traces them back to an improvised solution the US Navy needed after Pearl Harbor: with combat carriers scarce, two former coal-fired passenger steamers, the USS Wolverine and USS Sable, were converted into makeshift training flattops. Over 15,000 carrier pilots learned to land on their pitching decks, and not all of them made it, sending dozens of Wildcats and other warbirds to the bottom of the lake. The documentary follows the divers and historians recovering these unusually well-preserved aircraft, using archival photographs, ship records, and underwater footage of the wrecks themselves. It lays out how a program built on repurposed steamships and freshwater training runs ended up shaping the pilots who fought the carrier war in the Pacific. The recovered planes, still recognizable after decades submerged, are the clearest evidence of how much this overlooked corner of the war actually mattered.
