Hillbrow is a dense, crime-heavy neighborhood in inner-city Johannesburg that filmmaker Clifford Bestall once called home, and he returns to it with a camera rather than an argument. The film follows a handful of residents built around a boxing gym: George, known as 'the brick,' an aging fighter whose gym anchors the neighborhood's daily life, and Busi and Mimie, two women boxers training in the ring while trying to build a way out of South Africa altogether. Les, who runs a nightclub, works the neighborhood's chaos for opportunity rather than fleeing it. Bernice, an elderly Jewish woman, is one of the last white residents still living in Hillbrow, her presence a leftover marker of the area's earlier demographics before white flight and later immigration reshaped it. Bestall moves between these lives without a narrator steering the interpretation, letting the gym, the streets, and the nightclub carry the picture of a neighborhood that is simultaneously dangerous and, for the people in it, still livable.
