In 1703, samurai lord Asano Naganori loses his temper inside Edo Castle and draws his sword on a senior court official, a breach that costs him his life and his lands. The film follows their case as a way into the wider question of what actually made samurai warriors so difficult to defeat in battle, covering the training, weapons, and code of conduct that shaped Japan's warrior class under the Shogunate. Historians walk through the mechanics of the eventual raid on the official's mansion, the swordsmanship and tactics involved, and the aftermath, when the ronin surrendered and were ordered to take their own lives rather than face execution as criminals.
