Before he was a dictator, Adolf Hitler was a rejected art student sleeping in Vienna hostels, and this film traces the path from that failure to the chancellorship of Germany. It follows his years as a frustrated painter, his service in the First World War, and the bitterness he carried out of Germany's defeat and the Treaty of Versailles into the beer halls of Munich, where the Nazi Party first took shape. The film lays out how the economic collapse of the Great Depression turned a fringe agitator into a mass movement, and walks through the specific political maneuvers, the Reichstag fire, the Enabling Act, the purge of rivals, that let him dismantle German democracy from within rather than seize it by force. It closes on the machinery of persecution built once power was secured, from the early boycotts and Nuremberg Laws through to the Holocaust. Archival photographs, wartime footage, and historian commentary carry the narrative from obscure failure to catastrophe.
