Their journal entries, read aloud and illustrated in a graphic-novel style, describe nights spent in bunkers, the fear of Allied bombing raids, and the growing scarcity of food as defeat closes in. Some writers who had supported the regime record their disillusionment; others, persecuted under Nazi racial laws, write about the narrowing odds of survival as deportations continue. A few diaries simply stop, their authors' fates left unstated. There are no historians or narrators explaining what happened next, only the diarists' own words, written without knowing whether Germany or they themselves would still exist the following year. The episode closes the series with the regime's collapse seen entirely from inside ordinary households, from a Gestapo raid to the quiet relief, or grief, of the war's last days.
