German boys join the Jungvolk at ten, the Hitler Youth at fourteen, and by eighteen stand ready for the party, the Wehrmacht, the SA, or the SS. This fourth installment of Guido Knopp's five-part series for ZDF turns to what came after that indoctrination: war itself. Witness testimony from men who were teenagers in Nazi uniform sits alongside archive footage, much of it previously unpublished, tracking how boys trained for loyalty and obedience were pushed into combat as the Reich's fortunes turned. The film follows the shift from ceremonial marches and camp drills to actual fighting, including the desperate later stages when increasingly young recruits were sent to the front. Knopp's approach throughout the series is to let the former Hitler Youth members describe their own experience in their own words, without narration softening what they say about believing in Hitler completely, then having to fight and sometimes die for that belief. It is one part of a larger portrait of a generation shaped almost entirely by one totalitarian state.
