Hollywood Homes by Architect Richard Neutra

2011 · EN · STATUS: [ STREAMING ]

Richard Neutra's glass-and-steel houses turned 1930s and 40s Los Angeles into a showcase for European modernism transplanted to the California hillsides. Presenter Justine Frischmann tours the surviving properties, walking through the flat roofs, floor-to-ceiling windows, and indoor-outdoor living spaces that made Neutra the architect of choice for Hollywood clients chasing a clean, machine-age glamour. Some houses have been bought by collectors and restored down to the original built-in furniture, their market values now running into the millions. Others have not been so lucky: the film documents one significant Neutra home torn down shortly before filming, a loss that frames the wider question of how Los Angeles treats its modernist heritage. Interviews with owners, architects, and preservationists lay out the tension between private property rights and architectural conservation in a city where land value routinely outweighs historical value. The film works as both a tour of a distinctive body of work and a case study in what gets saved and what gets demolished.
