Homeless Heroes

2013 · EN · STATUS: [ STREAMING ]

An estimated 55,000 female veterans in the United States are homeless, and this film asks why the country they served has stopped looking after them. Interviews with women who served in Iraq and Afghanistan trace how deployment, trauma, and family breakdown after discharge left them without stable housing, often sleeping in cars or shelters rather than seeking help. The film follows caseworkers and shelter staff who describe a veteran support system built mostly around men, one that frequently fails to account for military sexual trauma, childcare needs, or the specific stigma women feel admitting they cannot cope. Government statistics and outreach workers lay out the scale of the problem, while the women themselves describe the gap between the public image of the returning soldier and the reality of eviction notices and food banks. The film stays close to individual stories rather than policy debate, making the case that homelessness among female veterans is undercounted and largely invisible to the public that thanks them for their service.
