Honest Man: The Life of R. Budd Dwyer

EN · STATUS: [ STREAMING ]

R. Budd Dwyer was the Pennsylvania State Treasurer who, on January 22, 1987, called a press conference the day before his sentencing for bribery and conspiracy charges he always denied, then shot himself in front of the cameras. The footage spread across local news and later the internet, turning Dwyer into a grim meme and a fixture of true-crime forums long before most viewers learned who he actually was. This film goes back to Meadville and the people who knew him, family, colleagues, and reporters who covered the case, to reconstruct the man behind the clip: his rise in Pennsylvania politics, the computer-contract kickback scandal that ended it, and his insistence to the end that he was innocent. Archival news broadcasts, courtroom material, and interviews build a chronology that runs from his early career to the press conference itself. The documentary treats the viral footage as a starting point rather than the subject, asking what happens to a person's life story once one moment of it becomes public property.
