Brandenburg has the poorest soil quality of any German state, and its thin humus layer has been shrinking for decades under drought, erratic rainfall, and yield-focused farming. This film follows the people trying to reverse that. Lena and Philipp Adler run a three-hectare organic vegetable farm where mechanical weeding, fallow patches, and crop diversity keep the soil's microorganisms, springtails, worms, and centipedes alive. Conventional farmer Mark Dümichen has stopped tilling after harvest and sows directly into the field instead, a change he says has stabilized his yields. Isabella Krause of Regionalwert AG Berlin-Brandenburg has built a network of growers experimenting with chickpeas as a crop suited to the region's hotter summers, working alongside researchers to test what will actually grow as the climate shifts. Interviews with these farmers and scientists are paired with footage of the fields and the soil itself, down to the insects and fungi that make up the humus layer. The film treats soil health as an economic and food-security issue, not just an ecological one, tracing how thinning topsoil threatens both farm livelihoods and grocery prices.
