Hawaii spent centuries as an independent kingdom before becoming the fiftieth American state in 1959, and this film traces how that happened. It follows the overthrow of Queen Liliuokalani in 1893, the role of American sugar planters and business interests in engineering her removal, and the annexation that followed a few years later despite a formal apology issued by the U.S. government decades afterward. The film uses archival photographs, historical documents, and expert interviews to lay out the sequence of treaties, coups, and votes that moved Hawaii from monarchy to territory to state, and it does not shy away from the argument that the process was less a natural transition than a takeover dressed in legal process. Native Hawaiian sovereignty movements and their ongoing objections to the statehood vote get direct attention rather than a footnote. The result is a plain historical account that treats Hawaii's path to statehood as a contested political story rather than a settled footnote in American expansion.
