Filmmaker and composer Chris Brickler starts with a home movie: in 2004 he sits down with his grandparents to record their thoughts after 63 years of marriage, meaning only to make a keepsake DVD for the family. Their answers stay with him, and by the time the film is finished their marriage has reached 68 years. That conversation becomes the seed for a much wider set of interviews, as Brickler takes the same questions about commitment, fidelity, and lasting attraction to other couples and individuals outside his family, comparing their answers against his grandparents' example. The film is the secular cut of a feature drawn from the Emmy-nominated series Song of Songs, and it treats romantic love less as a fixed tradition than as something each generation has to work out for itself under different pressures.
