Kenny Ausubel, author and founder of Bioneers, tells the story of Harry Hoxsey at the 1999 Bioneers National Conference, arguing that a miner with only an elementary school education built a herbal cancer treatment in 1924 that the American Medical Association worked to bury rather than test. Hoxsey claimed the formula came from his dying father, a folk remedy passed down through generations, and he opened a clinic on the promise of treating any patient regardless of ability to pay. Ausubel traces how that clinic grew into a national network and how it collided head-on with organized medicine, ending in prosecutions and public battles over whether Hoxsey was a healer or a fraud. The talk stays close to Ausubel's own research into the case, using Hoxsey's rise and legal troubles to ask a broader question about who gets to decide what counts as legitimate medicine, and what happens to healers who operate outside that boundary.
