The Hubble Space Telescope goes up in 1990 with a mirror ground to the wrong shape, a flaw that turns the most expensive camera in orbit into a public embarrassment before it produces a single usable image. This film covers the fix, a 1993 spacewalk that fits Hubble with corrective optics, and the run of results that follow: sharper views of distant galaxies, star nurseries, and planetary atmospheres than any ground-based telescope had managed. Made to mark the telescope's fifteenth anniversary on 24 April 2005, it traces the joint NASA and European Space Agency project from its early setbacks through the servicing missions that kept extending its working life. Footage moves between mission control, the telescope's own imagery, and the astronauts who serviced it in orbit, laying out both the engineering problems and the science those repairs made possible. The film treats Hubble's troubled start as part of the story rather than a footnote, using it to frame just how far the project traveled in fifteen years.
