More than 20,000 forced laborers died building the V2, Hitler's 'Vengeance' rocket, in tunnels at the Mittelwerk factory. This History Hit documentary follows the man behind the program, Wernher von Braun, and the American intelligence officer, Robert Staver, sent to find him and his team before the Soviets did. Archival footage and expert interviews trace Operation Paperclip, the secret effort that smuggled von Braun and more than a thousand other German scientists into the United States, wiping clean their Nazi Party membership and, in some cases, direct ties to slave labor and concentration camp deaths. The film weighs what these scientists gave America, from military rocketry to the Apollo moon landings, against what they escaped: prosecution for war crimes that sent lower-ranking colleagues to the gallows at Nuremberg. It asks whether men who built a weapon designed to kill civilians indiscriminately can be separated from the deaths their factories caused, and lets the historians disagree.
