I am Dutch, am I?

2012 · EN · STATUS: [ STREAMING ]

Sofia arrived in the Netherlands from Colombia at age two, carried across the border without papers by her family. Now twenty-three, she has spent her entire life in Dutch schools, speaking Dutch, thinking of herself as Dutch, yet she holds no residence permit and no path to one. The film follows her through the daily mechanics of being undocumented: the jobs she cannot legally take, the ID checks she has to dodge, the bureaucratic dead ends when she tries to regularize her status through the Dutch immigration system. Interviews with Sofia carry the film, letting her describe what it feels like to belong culturally to a country that does not recognize her existence on paper. It is a small, focused case study rather than a broad policy survey, using one life to make visible a category of people, the so-called '1.5 generation' of child migrants, who fall through the gaps between asylum law and residency law. The stakes are concrete: without a permit, adulthood in the only country she knows stays permanently provisional.
