I Beat Mike Tyson
In June 2005, journeyman heavyweight Kevin McBride stepped into the ring with Mike Tyson in Washington, D.C. and won when Tyson quit on his stool after the sixth round, ending Tyson's career in front of a paying crowd and a much larger television audience. Director Joshua Z Weinstein tracks down McBride years later to find out what happened to the man who delivered that upset, and the answer is not the triumphant career you might expect. Interviews and present-day footage follow McBride back to ordinary life, away from cameras and title fights, while the film traces how a single night of global attention faded into obscurity. The contrast between the scale of that victory, replayed through news clips and fight footage, and the quiet of McBride's life afterward gives the short its shape. It is less a boxing film than a study of what fame does, and does not do, for the person who briefly holds it.
