I, Psychopath

EN · STATUS: [ STREAMING ]

Sam Vaknin has spent years diagnosing himself as a narcissist online, but a chance remark suggests something darker: that he might actually be a psychopath. This film follows Vaknin, his wife Lidija, and director Ian Walker as they travel across Europe seeking a formal answer, sitting Vaknin down with psychologists, criminologists, and brain researchers who administer standard psychopathy tests and scan his responses to disturbing imagery. Vaknin narrates his own behavior with unsettling detachment, describing his manipulation of Lidija and others as a kind of case study he happens to inhabit, while she offers a quieter, more exhausted counterpoint from inside the relationship. The experts disagree among themselves about where Vaknin actually falls on the spectrum, and the film lets that disagreement stand rather than forcing a verdict. What makes it uncomfortable is Vaknin's evident enjoyment of the process, treating his own diagnosis as performance as much as inquiry, and leaving the viewer to decide how much of what they've watched was genuine self-examination.
