Ice Breakers

Josh Crooks says he was born to play hockey. He is also the only Black player on his team, in a sport where that isolation is not incidental, and the film follows him through practices, games, and locker rooms to show what that loneliness looks like day to day. Interviews and rink footage trace how Josh built his identity around a sport that rarely reflects him back, and what it costs to keep showing up anyway. The short stays close to Josh himself rather than turning into a broad survey of race in hockey, letting his own account of skating, competing, and being watched carry the film. It is a small, specific portrait of one athlete's persistence rather than a policy argument, and it treats his ambition on the ice as the real subject, with the racial isolation as the condition he plays through rather than the whole story.
