Iceland has no army, sits alone in the North Atlantic, and spent the Cold War as one of the most strategically valuable pieces of real estate on the planet. This film traces how the island became a critical link in the chain keeping Soviet submarines out of the Atlantic, from the wartime Allied occupation that first put troops on Icelandic soil to the establishment of the US base at Keflavik. Archival footage and historian interviews cover the tension between Iceland's tiny population and its outsized geopolitical role, including the domestic political battles over hosting NATO forces and the resentment some Icelanders felt toward a foreign military presence in their neutral, demilitarized country.
