Anja Niedringhaus spent her career photographing wars in Bosnia, Iraq, and Afghanistan, winning the 2005 Pulitzer Prize with a team of Associated Press colleagues for images that focused less on combat than on the people living through it. The film traces her path from a German photojournalist skeptical of the "war photographer" label to a mentor who spent months in the field training younger colleagues. It builds toward 4 April 2014, when an Afghan police officer opened fire on her car in Khost province, killing her and wounding her friend and colleague Kathy Gannon, who survived. Drawing on interviews with colleagues, family, and investigators, the documentary follows the official line that the shooter acted alone and sets it against evidence of ties reaching into Afghan politics and a terrorist network the West kept cooperating with against the Taliban. It asks directly why parts of the case were left unexamined, whether to protect German authorities or a wartime alliance, leaving the killing's full circumstances unresolved.
