Ethiopia in the early 1990s, just after the fall of the Derg regime, is the subject facing filmmaker Haile Gerima and Polish journalist Ryszard Kapuscinski as they travel the country together for this BBC production. Gerima, born in Gondar and long based in the United States, returns as both insider and outsider, while Kapuscinski brings the eye of a foreign correspondent who has covered famine and revolution across Africa before. The two men stop in villages and towns, putting their questions directly to farmers, workers, and officials in English and Amharic, asking what has actually changed since the old government collapsed. The film gives its subjects long, unedited stretches to answer, letting contradictions stand rather than resolving them into a single verdict on the country's direction. Economic hardship and political uncertainty come up repeatedly, alongside people's own accounts of what they expect from the new order.
