Every year the German War Graves Commission fields more than 35,000 enquiries from families still looking for relatives who never came home from the Second World War. This film follows commission researchers Oliver Breithaupt and Kathrin Krabs as they trace missing soldiers from a scrap of evidence: a photograph, a letter, a death notice, a dog tag, or human remains turned up by chance on a building site. The team carefully exhumes and examines what is found, sometimes spending years piecing together a single identity before a name can finally go on a gravestone. One thread follows Edla C., now 86, who receives the cast of a seal her brother was believed to be holding when he died in 1945, ten years her senior and, until now, only a face in a single photograph. The commission's work covers war dead regardless of nationality, rank, or which side they fought for, and the film treats each identification as both a family reckoning and a quiet argument against forgetting how these deaths happened.
