When the war ended in 1945, most prisoners and slave laborers could go home. Around 50,000 Jewish concentration camp survivors could not, since their eastern European homelands offered nothing to return to. The film follows their story through Landsberg am Lech, a Bavarian town whose Displaced Persons camp held up to 7,000 Jews between 1945 and 1950, a self-contained community waiting inside the country of the people who had tried to kill them. Survivors including 94-year-old Jakob Bresler, who lived through eleven camps and ghettos, describe searching for lost families, learning trades, and trying to leave Germany for good. Historian Atina Grossmann explains how the DP camps became an international political problem rather than a temporary way station. The film also examines Germany's postwar claim of a 'Zero Hour' break with the past, contrasting it with a 1951 Landsberg rally that appealed for 'Christian mercy' aimed not at the Holocaust's victims. Interviews and archival footage carry the account.
