Insane Asylum in Mexico

2012 · EN · STATUS: [ STREAMING ]

José Galvan runs one of the only psychiatric institutions of its kind in Mexico, a facility that takes in patients other hospitals and families have given up on. The film follows daily life inside the asylum: overcrowded rooms, patients with no formal diagnosis or paperwork, staff stretched thin trying to manage conditions with almost no state support. Some residents have been there for years with no visitors; others arrived after being found wandering the streets and were simply dropped off with nowhere else to go. Galvan speaks about why he keeps the doors open despite the lack of funding and the toll the work takes, while the camera lingers on the physical state of the building itself, peeling walls, bare cells, patients left to their own routines. The film does not editorialize much beyond what it shows, letting the gap between the scale of need and the resources available speak for itself.
