Hidden in the Masurian Woods of what is now Poland, the Wolf's Lair was the largest of Hitler's field headquarters, a concrete complex built to house roughly 2,000 people like a small fortified town. The film traces its clandestine construction and daily operation through the accounts of military personnel and former residents of the surrounding state, showing how the site functioned as the nerve center for the invasion of the Soviet Union in 1941. It follows the power structure of the Nazi leadership as it operated from these bunkers, including meetings where Himmler and Heydrich discussed the extermination of Europe's Jews and where Goebbels laid out wartime propaganda strategy. The complex is also where a group of officers attempted to assassinate Hitler and failed. Walking the mossy ruins that still stand today, the documentary uses this single location to track the war's escalation and the increasingly isolated, erratic decision-making that came out of it, ending in the catastrophe that followed.
