Galileo stands before the Inquisition, and the film uses that confrontation as the opening crack in medieval certainty. From there it tracks the philosophers who built the modern Western mind: Descartes doubting everything down to his own existence, Hobbes arguing that without strong government life turns brutal and short, Spinoza excommunicated for treating God and nature as one thing, Locke laying out the rights government cannot take away, and Hume questioning whether cause and effect is anything more than habit. Kant closes the arc, trying to reconcile reason with the limits of what the mind can actually know. The documentary moves through courts, universities, and censorship battles across Europe, showing how these ideas collided with church authority and, in some cases, put their authors' lives at risk. It treats the Enlightenment not as a single movement but as a running argument between thinkers who often disagreed violently with each other, and traces a direct line from that argument to modern science, secular politics, and human rights.
