Karl Marx spent much of his adult life in exile in London, scraping by on Friedrich Engels's support while writing the book that would outlast every government it inspired. This History Hit production traces that life from his early journalism and expulsion from Prussia through the writing of Das Kapital, using archival documents and period images to reconstruct how a philosopher became the reference point for revolutions he never lived to see. The film follows his ideas forward into the twentieth century, showing how they were adapted, and often distorted, by the Soviet Union and Maoist China, and asks how much of that legacy Marx himself would recognize. Historians walk through his core arguments about industrial capitalism's internal contradictions and his predictions of crisis, treating him neither as prophet nor villain but as a thinker whose analysis and consequences have to be judged separately. It closes on the open question historians still argue over: whether his diagnosis of capitalism was more durable than the political systems built in his name.
