MIT's 6.111 covers digital logic design through lectures and hands-on labs, working through flip-flops, PALs, counters, timing and synchronization issues, finite-state machines, and microprogrammed systems. Students use VHDL extensively to describe and implement digital circuits, building up from basic components to more complex systems. The course culminates in a self-chosen final project, past examples include games, music synthesis, digital filters, and graphics generators, giving students a chance to apply the semester's techniques to a real design problem of their own choosing. Materials on MIT OpenCourseWare include lecture notes and lab assignments reflecting the course's substantial engineering design workload (worth 12 Engineering Design Points at MIT). This is a rigorous hardware design course rather than a survey, aimed at students ready to build actual digital systems rather than just study theory.
