Investigating the Haitian Zombie
A rumor persists in Haiti that a secret drug can turn a living person into a zombie, and VICE correspondent Hamilton travels to Port-au-Prince to find out if it's true. The film follows him through the city and into conversations with practitioners of Haitian Vodou, locals who repeat the zombie stories as fact, and anyone who might know what the alleged poison actually contains. Rather than staying at the level of legend, the series treats the question as a real investigation: is there a pharmacological basis for zombification, tied to folk toxicology and ritual practice, or is the phenomenon better explained by social and cultural pressures unique to Haiti? Hamilton plays the outsider trying to get straight answers in a culture where the line between belief and biology is not always where a visitor expects it. The six-part series stays close to his search rather than offering a tidy conclusion, following leads through Port-au-Prince as they come rather than building toward a scripted reveal.
