iProtest: Activist Debby Chan vs. Apple & Foxconn
Debby Chan works for SACOM, a Hong Kong labor rights group, and this film follows her campaign against Foxconn, the manufacturer that assembles iPhones and iPads for Apple. The factory floors in Shenzhen, the dormitories workers live in, and the aftermath of a string of worker suicides in 2010 form the backdrop as Chan gathers testimony, confronts company representatives, and pushes for public accountability from one of the world's most recognizable brands. The film tracks the mechanics of activism itself: how she collects evidence of excessive overtime and cramped living conditions, how she pitches the story to journalists and shareholders, and how Apple and Foxconn respond to the pressure. It is less interested in spectacle than in the slow, procedural work of holding a global supply chain to account, and it treats Chan's frustrations and small victories with equal weight. The result is a close look at what consumer-facing activism against a manufacturing giant actually involves.
