High in the Zagros Mountains, the Bakhtiari still move their herds twice a year, on foot and by mule, between summer highland pastures and winter lowland camps, a migration their families have repeated since before written Persian history. The film follows several households through this seasonal trek across glacier-fed valleys and snow-capped passes, showing tents pitched and struck, animals loaded, and children walking routes their grandparents walked. Interviews with tribal elders and younger family members lay out what the migration still provides, and what it costs, as roads, settled schooling, and government resettlement programs pull the next generation toward towns. Herding, milking, weaving, and slaughter are shown in unhurried detail rather than summarized in voiceover, and the camera lingers on the landscape that shapes every decision the Bakhtiari make about where and when to move. The result is a portrait of rural Iran that has nothing to do with Tehran or the desert cities usually shown on screen, focused instead on a pastoral culture now visibly thinning out.
