In the mountains of northern Iraq, small camps of Kurdish exiles from Iran live under constant threat of rocket and drone strikes. This DW Documentary film follows fighters affiliated with the Kurdistan Democratic Party of Iran, who fled across the border and joined armed resistance units rather than submit to Tehran. Interviews with the men and women in these camps describe life under Iran's surveillance systems, which make even a phone call home dangerous, and several fighters recount their roles in the protests that followed the death of Jina Mahsa Amini, detained by Iran's morality police over hijab rules. The film also covers the political pressure on Baghdad, after Tehran issued an ultimatum demanding Iraq disarm and relocate these groups away from the border, and shows why some fighters refuse to leave despite the risk. An editor's note updates the story with a January 2024 Revolutionary Guards missile strike on Erbil that killed at least four people, which Iran claimed targeted an Israeli intelligence site.
