For much of the 20th century, an unmarried pregnant woman in Catholic Ireland could be sent by her priest to one of eighteen mother and baby homes, her child taken for adoption without her consent. By 1998 more than 50,000 women had lost their babies this way. Paul Redmond, born in one such home, returns to the now-empty building and describes infants left unchanged in their beds, disabled and mixed-race children singled out for neglect. In Tuam, local historian Catherine Corless recounts how she found records showing the concealed deaths of almost 800 babies and children, buried in a mass grave on the home's grounds, a discovery that triggered a national investigation and calls for exhumation. Anna Corrigan tells how she learned she had two brothers born at Tuam: one has a death certificate, the other's fate remains unknown, and she still hopes he is alive. Interviews and location footage trace how survivors and relatives are now pushing Ireland to acknowledge what happened.
