The Carlyle Group operates from Washington D.C. as a private equity firm whose client list reads like a who's who of global power: the Bush family, the Saudi royal family, members of Osama bin Laden's family, and figures in Donald Rumsfeld's circle have all had ties to the firm. Produced for the Dutch series Tegenlicht, the film traces Carlyle's path from a modest equity firm to one of the world's largest defense contractors, showing how its advisers move fluidly between boardrooms, government posts, and military contracts, a pattern the film calls the "iron triangle" of industry, government, and the armed forces. Interviews and archival material lay out how the September 11 attacks and the subsequent invasion of Iraq coincided with a sharp increase in the firm's influence and revenue. The film does not claim to prove a conspiracy so much as map a network, letting the overlapping names and contracts speak for themselves. What it leaves the viewer with is a portrait of access: how private capital and public power can become nearly indistinguishable at the top.
