In 1931, Adolph Ruth walked into Arizona's Superstition Mountains chasing rumors of the Lost Dutchman's Mine, a fortune in gold supposedly hidden by German prospector Jacob Waltz decades earlier. Six months later, searchers found his skull with two bullet holes in it. The rest of him was never fully accounted for. This film traces Ruth's last known movements through the mountains he never came back from, and lays out the theories that have circulated ever since: murder over a map, an accident dressed up as foul play, or a killing meant to protect a mine someone else had already found. Historians and locals who know the terrain walk through the physical evidence, the folklore around Waltz's original claim, and the string of other deaths and disappearances that have attached themselves to the Superstitions over the following century. The film treats the gold itself as almost secondary to the question underneath: whether Ruth actually found something worth dying for, or simply vanished into a landscape that has swallowed searchers before and since.
