In October 1986 the Sunday Times published his account, confirming what analysts had long suspected: Israel had built a sophisticated nuclear arsenal it had never officially acknowledged. Journalist Olenka Frenkiel traces how Sunday Times reporter Peter Hounam pursued the story after hearing rumors of a whistleblower with proof, and what happened once the scoop ran. Vanunu was lured to Rome, drugged, and abducted by Mossad agents, then smuggled back to Israel for a secret trial that convicted him of treason and espionage. The film follows his sentence forward: seventeen years in prison, all of them in solitary confinement in a cell barely large enough to move in, with a parole appeal denied and his release not due until 2004.
