Forty-five participants check into Tao Garden in Chiang Mai, Thailand, for nine days and nine nights in total darkness, eating no physical food and keeping silence and stillness the entire time. The retreat is run by Jasmuheen, the Australian spiritual teacher known for her claims about living without food, and the film follows participants from their arrival and pre-retreat cleanse through their time sealed in blacked-out rooms with only meditation and yoga to structure the hours. Testimonials, filmed after the nine days end, describe the swing from early fear and disorientation to what several call a lasting sense of calm. The camera does not go inside the dark rooms themselves; the record of what happened there comes entirely from what participants say once they emerge, blinking, back into daylight. It is a portrait of an extreme practice told secondhand, through the people who put themselves through it and what they claim it did to them.
